Stepping into 2021 with eyes forward
On embracing a new journey, wholehearted living and connecting with community.
“Eyes forward!”
It’s a common phrase I needed to pull out when I was teaching my daughter how to ride a bike. The moment she’d look back at me, or even to the side, she’d swerve and cut me off, or fall right over.
It’s also something I’m telling myself these days. It’s tempting to want to reflect on the year that just happened, as though I’m rubbernecking to look back at a wrecked car after it flew off the highway.
I can’t make sense of it. We’ve endured the unimaginable. And while the year’s end normally gives me a chance to pause and reflect, this year I’m bundling up everything I learned in 2020 (maybe, eventually, I’ll share it 😊) and excitedly stepping into 2021, with eyes forward.
I’m not pretending that didn’t just happen. I’m just not giving it power over me.
That is part of the impetus for this new Substack. I wanted to create a space for something new, to connect with my community in a fresh way. I also want to maintain a healthy relationship with social media and that means taking some of this content off of there and posting it for a dedicated audience (ie. YOU). I also miss blogging, and without overcommitting myself, want to dig back into that style of writing. Finally, I want to step more fully into the ideas around wholehearted living (à la Brené Brown; you’ll see her mentioned a few times in this update) and I need a place to explore that.
So, will you join me?

What’s caught my attention lately… ✨
This episode of Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us with Tim Ferriss and Dax Shepard. There are so many reasons why I loved it, but Ferriss said something that truly blew my mind 🤯 – something to the effect of how “we become the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” Choose wisely.
If you’re wondering about this whole wholehearted living thing, check out this Wholehearted Inventory. Take the quiz and then dive into the book, The Gifts of Imperfection. It’s short but dense, and truly changed my outlook on things.
Some entries I’ll have more items here for you, maybe none. The point is that I’ll share the learnings that truly “wowed” me!
