I'm a big fan of podcasts and lately I’ve tuned into a few that have brought so much value to my life. So I thought I’d start a thread here today as we launch into the weekend to share a few of my latest finds and ask you what you’re listening to.
There’s a deep well of podcasts out there, which is both amazing and overwhelming. I’d like to expand my library, so please feel free to use the comments to tell me what you’re tuning into whether it’s a show or an episode. What did you like most about it?
You’ll notice my choices below have some common threads between them, namely they are geared towards self-development, making my life better, and deepening my understanding of the human experience. I suppose this is the space I’ve been in lately, and I love that I can listen to these conversations while I’m taking care of my body (walking, running or working out). I can then bring some of these lessons and learnings into my life. Of course, I’d need 200 lifetimes to apply all the wisdom, but I like to think much of it infuses into me on a subconscious level. I know that much of what I have heard in these conversations has stuck with me.

And if you’re waiting for that Mexico story, it’s coming. It’s proven to be challenging to write, but I’m working on it. Yesterday, my flow was interrupted by a flow of a different kind, namely a volcanic eruption in Iceland that uprooted my husband and his group from their hotel but that will likely go down in the memory books as one of the absolute coolest things they’d ever seen. As they evacuated, they caught some remarkable footage. Everyone is safe, but these things have a way of throwing my day sideways. 😊 Hence why I’m showing up today with something a bit different.
Four Favourite Things I’ve Listened to Recently:
Dan Levy’s Good News: No One Knows What They’re Doing
We Can Do Hard Things
I’m a huge Dan Levy fan (if you haven’t seen Schitt’s Creek, it’s a must). This guy knows how to keep it real and how to expose deeper truths about the human experience. He’s remarkably creative and, for us writers, he’s an inspirational storyteller. Tune in to hear his thoughts about our experiences around grief, friendships, and his choices as a screenwriter and creator.
The 51% Rule (and 3 More Strategies to Think Like a Millionaire)
The Mel Robbins Podcast
I don’t like the title of this podcast, though I suppose it’s an apt description based on her interview subject, the insanely successful entrepreneur, Steven Bartlett. Bartlett’s message is fresh. His personal experience was one to question the system he was growing up in and write his own rules — a practice that has served him tremendously well. I love the lesson about Type 1 and Type 2 decisions, and how we can experiment more with our lives. Well worth a listen!
Moving From Insider to Outsider: Derek Webb’s Peaceful Disruption
For the Love with Jen Hatmaker
If you’ve read Lights to Guide Me Home you’ll know a bit about my story in taking a step off the beaten track from the faith community I was raised in. This episode was so mind-blowing. I think for anyone who’s been deeply enmeshed in a church community and now finds themselves on the outside looking in… this is something I wish I could have listened to many times over the past 15-20 years so I didn’t feel so alone.
The Bravest Conversation We’ve Had: Andrea Gibson
We Can Do Hard Things
I wrote a whole issue of Field Notes about Andrea Gibson (Too Much Lives in a Moment) but I want to bring attention to their work once more. This conversation is one of the most profound I’ve ever heard and has made me want to live more deeply and intimately with the world around me. If anything, just tune into their reading of Tincture at the end.
Have a great weekend ahead! And happy listening!

I am an eight-generation Canadian and a descendent of British, Scottish and German settlers living, working, and recreating outdoors in Treaty 7 Territory — the homelands and gathering place for the Niitsitapi from the Blackfoot Confederacy, including the Siksika, Kainai, and Piikani First Nations; the Îyârhe Nakoda of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations; the Tsuut’ina First Nation; the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III and many others. I am doing my utmost, both personally and professionally, to deepen my understanding of the history of Indigenous peoples and the impacts of colonialism — past and present.
Thanks for these recommendations. Have been in need of some new podcasts!
Gah. I hate closed eco-systems like Apple has become. Can't listen unless you own an Apple product or allow iTunes to take over your machine. Anyway... I'll share one that I enjoy. Don't agree with everything said, but it sure makes me think: Naval https://open.spotify.com/show/7qZAVw03FuurfYnWIWwkHY?si=8bce46fb3d6c48e8
